Visa-free and C-3-1 applicants start with the basic documents

Sangmyung University’s winter-term notice provides a separate route for applicants from nationalities eligible for visa-free entry and a 90-day stay, as well as applicants for the C-3-1 short-term visa.

The basic documents for this route are as follows.

  • Admission application
  • Copy of passport
  • 2 color photos with a white background, 3×4cm, taken within the last 6 months
  • JPG file of the same photo
  • Copy of the graduation certificate for the highest level of education completed or original certificate of enrollment issued within the last 3 months
  • Copy of proof of international-student insurance

Applicants without insurance are informed that they can enroll in insurance in Korea.

Documents are submitted in Korean or English. Documents issued in another language must be accompanied by the original and a notarized Korean translation.

Visa-free applicants who are eligible for a 90-day stay are guided to take one term of the regular program. The school notice specifies C-3-1 for short-term visas and states that C-3-2 and C-3-9 tourist visas cannot be changed to D-4-1.

D-4-1 applicants prepare education, family, and financial documents

Applicants preparing a D-4-1 language-training visa submit certified education documents, family-relationship documents, and financial documents in addition to basic identity documents.

1. Basic applicant documents

  • Admission application and study plan
  • Copy of passport
  • Copy of the applicant’s ID
  • 2 color photos with a white background, 3×4cm, taken within the last 6 months
  • JPG file of the same photo

2. Education documents

  • Copy of graduation certificate for the highest level of education completed or original certificate of enrollment
  • Apostille or Korean diplomatic/consular legalization for the relevant education document
  • Original transcript showing grades for all years at the last school attended and GPA

Chinese nationals prepare a CHSI education verification report appropriate to their education program.

3. Financial documents

The basic financial-evidence threshold is at least KRW 10,000,000.

  • Bank balance certificate in the applicant’s name or a parent’s name
  • Transaction statements for the most recent 3~6 months
  • Evidence from the transaction history showing that the balance was maintained for at least 3 months

Vietnamese D-4-1 applicants also prepare the study-expense deposit confirmation equivalent to KRW 10,000,000 specified in the notice.

4. Family relationship and parents’ financial-capacity documents

  • Copy of family-relationship certificate or birth certificate
  • Apostille or Korean diplomatic/consular legalization for the family-relationship document
  • Copies of parents’ IDs or passports
  • Parents’ certificate of employment, business registration, or career certificate
  • Parents’ income certificate or tax-payment certificate

Chinese nationals also prepare a copy of the household register as family-relationship evidence.

TOPIK score reports, records of Korean-language study, and evidence explaining a gap after graduation are added for applicants to whom they apply.

Except for financial evidence, D-4-1 documents must be issued within the last 6 months. Scanned copies are emailed and originals are sent by mail.

China, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam have separate financial-document conditions

The financial-evidence method for D-4-1 applicants varies by nationality.

NationalityFinancial documents to prepare
ChinaPrepare the original bank balance certificate issued within 30 days of the visa or visa-issuance-confirmation application date. As of the application date, at least 6 months must remain on the deposit-freeze validity period.
UzbekistanPrepare a KRW 10,000,000 balance certificate issued by a Korean financial institution operating locally and maintain the balance for at least 3 months.
VietnamD-4-1 applicants prepare a study-expense deposit confirmation equivalent to KRW 10,000,000. Funds are placed in a withdrawal-restricted financial product at a commercial bank recognized in the notice, with a one-year structure allowing KRW 5,000,000 to be withdrawn every 6 months.

Because issue dates and balance-maintenance periods are prescribed for nationality-specific financial documents, applicants should check those conditions first when planning preparation.

Pay only after passing document screening and receiving the invoice

The payment order is application and document submission → pass document screening → individual invoice issued → tuition and application fee paid.

Tuition is KRW 1,500,000 per term and the application fee is KRW 50,000. D-4-1 applicants pay KRW 3,000,000 for two semesters of tuition plus the application fee.

Do not send tuition or the application fee before passing document screening. After receiving an invoice issued by the institute or payment instructions from the person in charge, remit the money under the applicant’s name. The KRW 50,000 application fee is nonrefundable.

The institute is in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and the regular program is 10 weeks and 200 hours

The institute office address listed in the winter-term notice is Room 401, 133 Dongsung-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul. Sangmyung University Institute of International Language and Culture Education opened in March 2005.

The regular Korean program has 6 levels, and each level consists of 10 weeks and 200 hours. Classes meet 5 days a week for 4 hours a day. The currently listed times are 09:00~13:00 for the morning class and 13:30~17:30 for the afternoon class.
