Key Points

  • For studying in Korea, prepare bank balance proof in this order: **① program (D-2 degree/D-4 language training) ② the university's actual location ③ account holder ④ issuance timing ⑤ university-specific requirements ⑥ actual study budget**.
  • Start with the common screening standards in the Ministry of Education's standard administrative guidelines revised on March 27, 2026, then connect them in sequence to the university's submission requirements and your actual spending plan.

For studying in Korea, prepare bank balance proof in this order: ① program (D-2 degree/D-4 language training) ② the university's actual location ③ account holder ④ issuance timing ⑤ university-specific requirements ⑥ actual study budget. Start with the common screening standards in the Ministry of Education's standard administrative guidelines revised on March 27, 2026, then connect them in sequence to the university's submission requirements and your actual spending plan.

First, separate the three amounts

CategoryMeaningWhat to check
Standard amountFinancial-capacity screening standard set by the Ministry of Education's standard administrative guidelines according to program and university locationDegree vs. language training, metropolitan area vs. other regions, and whether the degree program is shorter than 1 year
Amount required by the universityAmount and submission conditions the university actually requires during admissions review and issuance of the Standard Certificate of AdmissionWhether it exceeds the standard amount, and whether there are conditions for a holding period, a Korean bank account, a specified currency, or additional income documents
Actual study budgetFunds actually needed to continue studying and living in KoreaWhether tuition, dormitory fees, insurance and living expenses can all be covered

The Ministry of Education amount is the common screening standard, the university submission amount reflects the submission conditions set by the university you are applying to, and the actual study budget is the money needed to cover expenses after admission. Managing these three items in separate columns on a preparation sheet helps prevent one bank balance certificate from being interpreted as serving different purposes.

1. Confirm whether the program is a D-2 degree program or D-4 language training

The Study in Korea system classifies D-2 as a degree program and D-4 as a non-degree training program, and includes proof of financial capacity among the required documents for both statuses.

  • A program leading to a degree uses the degree-program standard.
  • A non-degree training program such as Korean-language training uses the language-training standard.

D-2 and D-4 are the principal stay statuses used to distinguish these program types. When preparing the actual documents, use the status name and program name exactly as written in the university admissions guidelines and visa application instructions.

2. Find the standard amount using the university's actual location

The metropolitan area means Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon. If the university's address is in one of these three areas, check the metropolitan-area standard; otherwise, check the regional standard. Classify the university by its actual location rather than promotional expressions such as 서울권 or 수도권 접근성.

ProgramUniversity in the metropolitan areaUniversity in another regionHow to interpret the period
Degree program (primarily D-2)At least 20,000,000 won per yearAt least 16,000,000 won per yearIf the period of stay is less than 1 year, tuition and living expenses proportional to the number of months of stay may be applied
Language training program (primarily D-4)At least 10,000,000 wonAt least 8,000,000 wonThe guidance states that the amount applies regardless of the period of stay

If the stay for a degree program is less than 1 year, tuition and living expenses proportional to the number of months of stay may be applied. Prepare the amount according to the calculation used for that program by the university and the authority actually conducting the review. The Ministry of Education guidance states that language training programs use at least 10,000,000 won in the metropolitan area or at least 8,000,000 won in other regions regardless of the period of stay.

> After finding the common amount for the program and region in this table, compare it in Step 5 with the latest admissions guidelines of the university and the current submission requirements of the competent Republic of Korea overseas mission or immigration office.

3. Decide whether the account will be in the student's, parent's or financial sponsor's name

A regular international student may use a bank balance certificate from a Korean or overseas bank in the student's or financial sponsor's name, proof of domestic remittance, or similar documents as proof of financial capacity. Choosing the account holder first clarifies which relationship, economic-activity and expense-support documents must be linked to it.

Account/support typeBasic financial documentDocuments to connect with it
Student's own accountBank balance certificate in the student's name from a Korean or overseas bank, or accepted proof of remittanceIssue date relative to the application date and the validity period stated on the certificate
Parent's accountBank balance certificate in a parent's name, etc.Proof of family relationship between applicant and account holder, matching English names, and documents on the parent's economic activity, assets and support of study expenses
Other financial sponsorBank balance certificate in the financial sponsor's name, etc.Required documents such as an employment certificate or business registration certificate, asset certificate, and pledge to cover study expenses
Scholarship studentScholarship certificate or confirmation of tuition supportScope of the scholarship and any additional financial documents required by the university
Inter-university exchange studentInvitation from the university president or dean and confirmation of tuition exemption, etc.Scope of the exchange/exemption and any separately required documents

The D-2 guidance on the Study in Korea system states that proof of family relationship is required when a parent's bank balance certificate is submitted. When using a parent's account, start with the family-relationship document and link any documents on the parent's economic activity, assets and support of study expenses required by the admissions guidelines or submission list using the same name information.

  • [ ] Prepared proof of the relationship between the applicant and account holder, and connected the applicant's name to the English name in the passport.
  • [ ] Matched the parent's English name across the bank balance certificate, family-relationship document, and employment/business documents.
  • [ ] Checked whether employees need an employment certificate and business owners need a business registration certificate.
  • [ ] Checked the admissions guidelines and submission list to see whether an asset certificate and separate income documents are required.
  • [ ] If a pledge to cover study expenses is required, matched the name of the person bearing the expenses with the account holder.
  • [ ] If a scholarship or other support is also provided, showed consistently across documents who covers which expenses.

When using another financial sponsor, do not submit every item listed in the Ministry of Education guidance—such as an employment certificate or business registration certificate, asset certificate, and pledge to cover study expenses—as a uniform set. Instead, match each document actually required on the submission list to the account holder's information. Prepare the bank balance certificate so that the source of funds, relationship, economic activity and expense-support documents explain one coherent study-funding plan, rather than temporarily adjusting only the balance or hiding the source of the funds.

Scholarship students prove the scope of support with a scholarship certificate or confirmation of tuition support, while inter-university exchange students use documents such as an invitation from the university president or dean and confirmation of tuition exemption. Read each confirmation to identify which expenses are covered and to what extent, and prepare any additional financial documents listed for submission.

4. Issue the certificate to match the university submission date and the visa/stay application date

The Ministry of Education's 2026 guidance sets out the following rules for the issue date and validity period of a bank balance certificate.

Item to checkMinistry of Education guidance
Basic issue dateBank balance certificate issued within 30 days before the application date
If a validity period is statedIt may be accepted until the validity date stated on the certificate
Maximum acceptance periodEven if a validity period is stated, it is accepted only for up to 6 months from the issue date

The basic schedule is to obtain the certificate within 30 days before the application date. If the certificate states a separate validity period, it may be accepted through that period, but not beyond 6 months from the date of issue.

Mark the university submission date and the visa/stay application date separately on a calendar, then count backward from each application date to determine the issue date. Even when the same certificate is submitted first to the university and then to an overseas mission, check both application dates and the deposit-holding and issuance conditions in the admissions guidelines separately.

5. Confirm the actual submission requirements of the university

Check the following items in order in the latest admissions guidelines.

  • [ ] Required amount and currency
  • [ ] Required holding period for maintaining the balance for a set period
  • [ ] Conditions concerning a Korean bank account
  • [ ] Employment, business, asset and income documents for a parent or financial sponsor
  • [ ] Distinction between documents for university submission and documents for visa/stay applications

A university may set an amount above the Ministry of Education standard, a specified holding period, a Korean bank account condition, a particular currency, or additional income documents. Rather than converting a dollar amount from an old admissions guide into the current Ministry of Education won standard on your own, copy the amount, currency and submission conditions exactly from the latest admissions guidelines for the program you are applying to now.

6. Calculate the actual study budget separately from the standard amount

Include tuition, dormitory fees, insurance and living expenses in the actual budget. If there is a scholarship or tuition exemption, reflect the covered item and amount, and separate the remaining expenses to be paid by the family or financial sponsor.

StageWho checks whatFinancial documents to prepare
University admissions reviewBefore issuing the Standard Certificate of Admission, the university checks the financial documents and its own additional requirementsMinistry of Education standard amount plus the amount, holding period, bank, currency and additional documents required by the university
Visa/stay reviewThe competent Republic of Korea overseas mission or immigration office checks documents according to factors such as nationality, university rating and stay historyDocuments that meet the issue-date/validity rules and current submission list for that application date
Actual ability to payThe applicant and family determine whether they can cover tuition, dormitory fees, insurance and living expensesA separate budget for tuition, housing, insurance and living expenses, apart from the standard amount

Meeting the standard bank balance amount is the financial-capacity proof stage, while visa and stay review also considers other factors such as academic background, admission, nationality, document authenticity and purpose of stay. Preparation is complete not when there is just one bank balance certificate, but when the common standard amount, university submission conditions and actual budget have each been established and the documents related to the account holder are connected as well.

One-page checklist before submission

OrderCompletion standard
1. ProgramConfirmed whether it is a degree program or a language training program.
2. LocationUsed the university's actual address to classify it as metropolitan-area or regional and found the standard amount.
3. Account holderChose the student, parent or financial sponsor as the account holder and connected relationship, economic-activity and expense-support documents.
4. Issuance timingChecked the 30-day rule, validity period and maximum 6-month range based on the university submission date and visa/stay application date.
5. University requirementsReflected the amount, holding period, bank, currency and additional income documents in the latest admissions guidelines.

Additional documents may be required depending on nationality, university rating, stay history, scholarship scope, and the relationship between the account holder and the applicant. Immediately before final submission, compare the latest admissions guidelines of the university with the current list from the competent Republic of Korea overseas mission or immigration office, and check the consistency of the full document set, including academic background, admission, nationality, document authenticity and purpose of stay considered in the visa/stay review.
