Applying to Korean Master’s Programs After an Indian Bachelor’s Degree: PNU Spring 2027 Closes at 17:00 on October 23; SNU and KAIST Applications Closed

To apply for a Korean master’s program for Spring 2027 after completing a bachelor’s program in India, holding a bachelor’s degree must not be treated as meaning the same thing as meeting the target university’s master’s eligibility requirement of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Each university’s admissions guidelines separately set the standards for recognizing degrees and equivalent qualifications, required documents, language proof and admissions procedures. In particular, a three-year Indian bachelor’s degree cannot be assumed to receive blanket automatic recognition from SNU, KAIST and PNU based on the degree title alone.

The current schedules also differ. As of September 21, 2026, applications for Spring 2027 at Seoul National University and KAIST had already closed, while Pusan National University’s special admission for international students to the Graduate School accepts online applications from 09:00 on October 12 to 17:00 on October 23, 2026. Separately from the online application, PNU requires the required documents to arrive by November 6, so the two deadlines must be managed separately.

Spring 2027 admissions are already at different stages by university

SNU announced all schedules in Korea time. KAIST’s current 2027 schedule page lists the Spring Entry application dates as August 18 through September 1 and does not show a separate time of day. PNU sets its online application deadline at 17:00 on October 23 in Korea Standard Time (KST), and accepts required documents, including registered mail and courier deliveries, only if they arrive by the November 6 document deadline. Even after completing the online application, an applicant is excluded from consideration if the required documents are not submitted within the prescribed period.

Check an Indian bachelor’s degree against each university’s equivalency language

SNU’s Spring 2027 admissions guide requires applicants to master’s and integrated master’s-doctoral programs to obtain a bachelor’s degree or a degree of equivalent or higher level by February 28, 2027. For overseas universities, it also recognizes cases in which all coursework is completed by February 28, 2027 and the degree is awarded in March 2027. PNU’s Spring 2027 admissions guide treats as eligible for master’s admission those who have obtained or are expected to obtain a bachelor’s degree from a university in Korea or abroad, or those whose academic qualifications are recognized by law as equivalent or higher; degrees recognized for eligibility are limited to degrees from universities officially accredited by the education ministry of the relevant country.

KAIST requires applicants to meet the bachelor’s-degree or equivalent standard before starting a master’s or integrated master’s-doctoral program, and gives the following public examples of equivalency to a Korean bachelor’s degree.

This list does not state that all three-year bachelor’s degrees from India are automatically recognized. Therefore, recognition or non-recognition of an Indian three-year degree cannot be concluded simply because the period of study is three years; the university to which the applicant actually applies reviews whether that degree meets its own bachelor’s-degree or equivalent standard. Even when KAIST’s English-test exemption requirements are met, the degree-equivalency requirement remains separate.

SNU separates online uploads from submission of originals after preliminary admission

During the application period, SNU applicants enter and upload the application form, personal statement and study plan, together with the required documents, online. Two recommendation letters must be written and submitted directly by two different recommenders through the designated online site; submission by email, fax or post is not accepted. The recommendation deadline was 17:00 on July 10, 2026, the day after the application deadline.

SNU standardized language scores were valid only if the test date was on or after July 9, 2024 and the score or level had been finalized by the application deadline. Some departments require TOPIK Level 5 or 6. The admissions process comprehensively evaluates academic ability, aptitude related to the department, language ability, and academic and extracurricular activities based on submitted materials; if a separate written test, interview or practical test is required under a department’s policy, the applicant is notified individually.

PNU reviews academic background, language, finances and study plans together

Applicants to master’s programs under PNU’s Spring 2027 special admission for international students to the Graduate School submit an application, study plan and personal statement, documents on the nationality and family relationship of the applicant and parents, proof of language proficiency, proof of financial capacity, a bachelor’s degree certificate or expected-degree certificate, and transcripts for all years of the bachelor’s program. Academic documents not in Korean or English must be submitted together with a notarized Korean or English translation and documents bearing an apostille or consular confirmation.

PNU language scores must be valid as of the application deadline, and some departments apply separate language standards higher than the general standard. Selection comprehensively reviews prior-level grades, academic ability, financial capacity to study, the study plan and personal statement, among other factors. It should not be described as an admission track that generally requires recommendation letters; the guide separately identifies recommendations required only for certain applicants, such as a recommendation from a professor at the applicant’s previous university for applicants to the Department of Mathematics.

Expected graduates must submit the final graduation certificate and transcript by February 26, 2027. PNU’s applicant notes specify that those who were expected to graduate at the time documents were submitted must submit the graduation (degree/completion) certificate by 18:00 on the same day; if the final academic documents are not submitted by the deadline, the Certificate of Admission may not be issued or admission may be cancelled.

For Indian academic documents, align the university submission stage with the apostille sequence

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in India’s guidance on academic records classifies university academic records as documents eligible for apostille issuance in India. It further instructs that university academic records in India should first be pre-authenticated by the regional authentication center listed in the embassy guidance and then processed through the apostille agency procedure. This concerns the procedure for authenticating academic records in India and is not a rule guaranteeing recognition of degree equivalency or admission by a Korean university.

SNU requires applicants to upload scans of originals during the online application and submit authenticated originals after preliminary admission, whereas PNU requires apostille or consular confirmation of academic documents at the application-document submission stage. India is included in PNU’s list of Apostille Convention countries as of July 9, 2026. The authentication sequence in India and each university’s submission timing therefore need to be aligned in a single schedule.

KAIST’s EPT exemption for Indian applicants has separate conditions

KAIST’s international graduate eligibility page states that an English Proficiency Test (EPT) score must be valid on the online application deadline and currently publishes the following minimum requirements.

KAIST states that it accepts TOEFL Home Edition and IELTS Online, but does not accept TOEFL MyBest Scores, IELTS One Skill Retake or ITP scores. The current page also separately lists GDI-ITTP and KINS-KAIST as programs for which an EPT score is not required.

The EPT exemption for Indian applicants is a separate conditional route. The current KAIST page states that an applicant may request exemption from submitting an EPT score if the applicant is an Indian national, at an educational institution physically located in India, with English as the medium of instruction, and has actually studied and completed a qualification equivalent to or higher than a bachelor’s degree. The applicant must additionally submit a medium-of-instruction certificate issued by the relevant undergraduate school or graduate school, such as an English Lecture Certificate, and the institution must be physically located in the designated country regardless of affiliation or partnership relationships.

This exemption applies only to submission of the KAIST EPT score. It does not mean automatic recognition of equivalency for a three-year Indian bachelor’s degree, admission to KAIST, or exemption from English-score requirements at SNU or PNU.

Separate the application file into university-specific rows

Combine the following items into one common checklist, but enter the actual values in separate rows for each university.

1. Degree title, university, period of study, graduation date, and the target program’s wording on degree/equivalency
2. Status of originals, translations, apostille or consular confirmation for the degree/graduation certificate and complete transcript
3. Recognition standards for TOPIK, English tests or proof of medium of instruction, including test date, validity date and exemption conditions
4. Whether and how to submit the personal statement, study plan and university/department-specific recommendation letters
5. Department-specific additional documents, portfolio, and whether written tests, interviews or practical tests apply
6. Separate deadlines for online application, recommendation letters, arrival of authenticated originals, final documents for expected graduates, and result announcements
7. Amount, issue date and guarantor conditions for universities requiring proof of finances

Frequently asked questions

Can a holder of a three-year Indian bachelor’s degree apply to a Korean master’s program?

The university-specific standards must be checked. KAIST publishes examples of certain equivalency standards, including a three-year Bologna-compliant bachelor’s degree, an EHEA first-cycle qualification and a British-style honours bachelor’s degree, but it does not state that all three-year Indian degrees are automatically recognized. SNU uses the standard of a bachelor’s degree or a degree of equivalent or higher level, while PNU uses a bachelor’s degree obtained or expected, or academic qualifications recognized by law as equivalent or higher. Therefore, eligibility at all three universities cannot be determined solely from the three-year period of study expressed as Indian three-year degree.

Is the English test automatically waived if I completed my bachelor’s degree in English in India?

No. Under KAIST’s current rules, there is a route to request an EPT exemption that jointly requires Indian nationality, an institution physically located in India, English as the medium of instruction, actual study and completion of a program equivalent to or higher than a bachelor’s degree, and a school-issued medium-of-instruction certificate. This concerns KAIST’s EPT requirement and cannot be extended to degree-equivalency determinations or SNU/PNU language requirements.

Does receiving an apostille complete all graduate-application documents?

No. An apostille is a procedure for authenticating academic documents. According to the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in India guidance, Indian university academic records should go through prior authentication by a regional authentication center before the apostille procedure, while universities may separately require notarized translations, online uploads or postal submission, language proof, a study plan, financial documents and department-specific additional documents. SNU and PNU also differ in when they require authenticated originals.
